Yeah, that’s what I told him. I know some people got lucky with the Tacoma TRD PRO and Ordered it without dealer markup. However they aren’t really in the same league.

I mean he could wait a couple of months for them to go back to normal...

Makes me think of the guys who bought the Challenger Hellcat at almost 100% markup, I giggle inside.

“Insane markup you say? Wow that’s too bad. If only there were some way to evade that. Maybe Ford could sell it to you themselves?... Nah. That’s a dumb idea that would never work. It’s so dumb in fact that it should be illegal. Yeah. That’s smart.”

Note that the base MSRP is below $50,000, but fully optioned, they are approaching $70,000 + without markup.

Did you confirm the MSRP of those $70-80k prices quoted by the dealer?

Where is your friend located? When I was searching for a GT350, I found a couple dealers that don’t charge markups on principle; if they’re close enough to him, or he’s willing to travel, I can pass them along.

We are in Phoenix. I told him to try and find a high volume dealer that just wants to deal and he might get away with a number closer to MSRP.

Ah, I’m not familiar with anything out west, unfortunately (the dealers I was speaking of are in NJ and AL). I do remember reading to stay away from Bell Ford in Phoenix, however.

I would recommend that he still keeps smaller dealers in mind. While larger dealers may be more willing to deal on regular cars, the prevailing attitude that I’ve encountered shows that they think that the specialty vehicles are the ones that they can make extra money on (one dealer local to me specifically said “We do enough giveaways here that we want to make money where we can.”). As a larger dealer, they can “afford” to let it sit in the showroom with a markup until it sells. Smaller dealers, on the other hand, don’t have the capital to maintain large inventories of vehicles, so they can be more willing to budge to get a vehicle sold quickly.

As always, YMMV, though it sucks for this to even be a problem in the first place.

But....but the dealership model is there to protect the consumer!

That is great advice on Bell Ford and that actually makes a lot of sense on the smaller dealer scale. I’ll tell him to try some dealers a little ways out of town too. Thanks!
